The other day one of my colleague asked me if I perform ICON treatments, since a patient could not find any dentist doing it. ICON is a product which is in use for many years but still unpopular even among dentists for some obscure reasons

Icon represents an entirely different and revolutionary approach to treatment of incipient caries or cosmetic treatment of white spots. This breakthrough micro-invasive technology fills and reinforces demineralized enamel without drilling or anesthesia therefore greater comfort. Icon can arrest the progress of early enamel lesions up to the first third of the dentin in one relatively simple procedure with the great advantage of arrest caries progress without loss of healthy tooth structure.

So basically if you have a demineralization of your teeth resulting in white discolouring, but without cavities, it is often possible to treat the tooth with this method. These white spots can be caused by fluorosis or initial tooth decay for example right after an orthodontic treatment with brackets

The dentist will first apply the rubber dam around your teeth and eventually clean the surface of your teeth with a brush and afterwards he/she will gently apply few products on your teeth without needing to drill! The result is almost immediate and very satisfying.

In few cases e.g. when the lesion is too deep and/or extensive or a cavity is already formed, a little composite filling aided by a mini-invasive sand-blasting/ drilling might be associated to improve the esthetic result
